Rifaximin, the active substance in Colidimin 200 mg, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the family of rifamycin antibiotics. Rifaximin inhibits a particular bacterial enzyme called RNA polymerase and thereby interferes with the metabolism of the bacterium.
Its bactericidal effect is directed against most bacteria that cause intestinal infections and the natural bacterial colonisation of the human bowel. Rifaximin exerts its effect solely on the gastro-intestinal tract.
